    M Private Residences in Barbados

It isn't surprising that many of our clients often express the desire to make Barbados their home away from home. It is a truly enchanting island of diverse beauty, with friendly people who enjoy a laid back lifestyle, and there are good communication links to the rest of the world.  Those dreams can be quickly dashed, however, as the reality of a two bedroom The Crane, Barbadosocean front condo along Barbados' West Coast nears the US$3 million dollar and up price range.  But savvy affluent individuals and families are discovering the far reaching economic benefits of becoming members in one of the fastest growing segments of the luxury travel market ' the Equity Destination Club or fractional real estate ownership. It is the same concept employed by Warren Buffett and NETJETS, the wholly owned aircraft fractional ownership subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. When Warren Buffett, perhaps the greatest investor of all time and currently the World's richest man, endorses the concept of fractional ownership, it is a wise investment move to sit up and take notice.Paradise Valley, Arizona

M Private Residences members actually collectively own an equity share of bricks and mortar in a luxury portfolio of fourteen (and growing) vacation residences in the US$2-$3 million range in locations worldwide.  M Private Residences shareholders currently own a magnificent cliffside property here in Barbados at The Crane, once Rich and Famously referred to as one of the World's top ten beaches. A West Coast residence is currently in negotiation.

Fractional ownership with M Private Residences allows its members all of the benefits of owning a multi-million dollar luxury vacation home without the hassles and expenses of property maintenance, repairs and fixed operational costs.  Further, its members are not saddled with the obligation that comes with individual ownership. And the value added 24/7 World Class concierge services available through a professional team of on the ground local hosts gives members an unequaled and seamless destination experience.

    Kelowna, British Columbia

From a purely financial perspective, the cost of membership in M Private Residences is far less expensive and infinitely less complicated than the traditional property purchase in Barbados. The math is quite simple: As an example, transaction costs in Barbados can run as high as 13% of the purchase price, notwithstanding the ancillary fees associated with the often used method of purchasing property via the creation of an offshore company. While perfunctory, any non-Barbados resident must seek Central Bank approval and declare the source of funding for the purchase."Island time" liquidity and subsequent repatriation of the proceeds can be a troubling issue if not planned for years in advance. The cost of maintenance, repairs, utilities, taxes, and staff wages on a second home here can run US$50,000 a year on a US$2 million property.
    Oahu, Hawaii
The initial capitalization and annual dues for an M Private Residence membership are dramatically less than the outright purchase and annual operating cost of owning a second vacation home. M Private Residences will facilitate the sale of registered  shares to the third newest share subscriber at current market prices less a transfer fee. The real bonus comes in the flexibility to have access to their other luxury properties in stunning locations around the World. All for hundreds of thousands less than the price of one Barbados property!

    Paradise Valley, Arizona

We invite you to contact us with any questions you may have about the M Private Residences concept, or please click on the banner above to visit the M Private Residences web site directly. Property visits by appointment only.  This is neither an offer to sell nor solicitation to buy shares in any jurisdiction in which such offer is prohibited.  The author has a financial relationship with M Private Residences.

A Day Trip to the Grenadines

There is no place further removed from the stress of every day life than a sail boat trip through the Grenadines. This archipelago of over 600 islands and cays, Union Islandstretching from St. Vincent in the north to Grenada in the south, is still largely unspoiled by development.  We recently joined several of our great friends, along with several now new dear friends, aboard the sailing vessel Flagship under the command of legendary Captain Roger Bagga.  Along with the ever-efficient first mate, Coastman, and the aptly named galley mate Angel (pronounced Ahn-jel) whose delicious fare is still a topic of discussion amongst our group, we were well looked after for the entire day.

Our party of ten left Barbados via a private plane Grenadines Airwaysfor the 100 mile, 50 minute flight to Union Island (population 3000) which is located at the Southern end of the Grenadines island chain. The plane flies at a mere 10,000 feet providing breathtaking photo ops from the window.  Known as the crossroads of the Grenadines, the air strip at Union Island's tiny airport is a thrill seekers delight when the plane swoops around a high rocky crag before descending roller coaster style onto the sometimes goat maintained runway. Clearing immigration and Customs is a "hello and welcome to "Union Island". Union Island AirportWe were taken on a 2 minute motorized tram (think Fantasy Island without Tattoo) ride to the dock for a warm greeting by Captain Bagga ---- Bagga or Roger to his friends ---- and champagne on ice. We breakfast on freshly baked banana, mango and coconut breads, local fruit and juices, with tea and coffee. My good mate hears the champagne calling and barely two Bucks Fizz to our UK hosts, or Mimosas to the Americans, later the Flagship is under sail towards our first destination, Mayreau. Settling in on the spacious deck under a sky streaked with rainbows, there is Happy IslandHappy Island off the port side, a you-have-to-see-it-to-believe-it man made island.  Local legend has it that a determined fellow named Shanti spent well over a year dumping palm fronds, rocks, conch shells and boat load upon tiny boatload of sand in order to create his own little untaxed piece of paradise.  Beer and rum is sold daily to passing watercraft assuming Shanti has decided to open that particular day for business.

Mayreau in Salt Whistle BayMayreau and its Salt Whistle Bay is our first anchor. There is not much there save for a small 10 room inn called Salt Whistle Club and sailing yachts flying flags from around the world. The Salt Whistle Club is owned by the Canadian Potter family who some 30 years ago decided everyday concerns like wearing shoes, traffic, and the concept of hurry should be options rather than requirements. 250 residents inhabit this island with no general electricity, a single, unnamed village and, only 2 or 3 motor vehicles depending on who is telling the story. After a refreshing swim to shore and a brief tour of the 1 ½ square mile island, we signal Flagship that it's time for a ride back to the boat in Coastman's launch. One of our guests thought she saw what vaguely resembled the Professor and Mary Ann but we attributed her bemusing notion to Captain Bagga's rum punch.  Several local Hairoun beers later, we set sail for the Tobago Cays, passing along the way a magnificent five- masted, 42 sail goliath of a sailing vessel, the Star Clipper's Royal Clipper Royal Clipperwhich originates in Barbados and other islands for trips throughout the Caribbean.  The Royal Clipper has the proud distinction of being the largest and only five-masted sailing ship built since her predecessor, Preussen, was launched at the beginning of the last century.

Flagship slices lazily into the channel of the Tobago Cays for a much anticipated lunch. Protected by a horseshoe shaped reef nearly 5 miles long, this is a place you already sense that you don't want to leave. The inviting white sand and crystal clear waters are a snorkeler's heaven. A feeling of sun-drugged hypnosis prevails that is strangely calming. Visions of quitting everything Tobago Caysand making this the escape you've always wanted gives way to yet another ice cold beverage from the reliable Coastman.

Lunch is announced and today's epicurean feast includes fresh local spiny lobster,  West Indian style spicy barbequed chicken and dolphin marinated in herbs and spices alongside breadfruit and plantains, accompanied by a delicious assortment of fresh salads, breads and fruits. Captain Bagga took the launch over to a nearby deserted islet and grilled the still moving crustaceans himself.  Several wonderful bottles of white burgundy made it all the more special. With sybaritic glee, we dig in to the sumptuous lunch display while anchored just off Petit Tabac. Petit TabacWe are so close that you could almost hear Captain Jack Sparrow bellowing from the Black Pearl. Alas, no sightings of either Johnny or Keira.  Petit Tabac was the setting for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.  And there is a reason why St Vincent and the Grenadines was chosen as the surroundings send the senses reeling, pinging the mind searching for just the right description of the water's color.blue topaz, no, aqua marine, maybe powder blueIf you cannot relax here you most certainly need a maximum dose of statins. This is the raw Caribbean without re-touched photos or cruise ship soldiers invading a different port each day.

After lunch, our group decides to pay a visit to Mopion.Mopion  Almost an editorial cartoon caricature in real life, we set foot on what looks like a sand bar in the middle of the sea with its one man made palm tree. Not a bad location to be marooned for the day if the company is right. You can hear Tom Hanks WILSON! WILSON!  Mopion is made up of the most incredible 'soft sand' which more than one visitor has commented that it should be bottled and sold on some late night infomercial as a miracle elixir.  Really; grab a handful of the sand at the water's edge and exfoliate to your heart's delight while standing atop this tiny dollop of sand surrounded by gently lapping surf breaking over the protective reef..

Time seems to have passed slowly. After enjoying our afternoon tea onboard it was time to head back to Union Island for the return trip to Barbados. There was no need to rush: it was our plane after all, and although we passed through a metal detector for security, the informal and friendly inspection is performed with one for the road, er, sky in hand. And we were number 1 and the only 1 for takeoff.

It was an uneventful trip back to Bim, or The Rock, as locals refer to Barbados.  During the short flight, we exchanged cameras to view and comment on the digital images, usually to spontaneous laughter, promising to email one another the downloaded files. Our pre-arranged mini coach was waiting for us curbside outside the arrivals hall. It was over. A great day, with great company. It is often said amongst the locals, that the worst Caribbean day is the best day in the rest of the world. We wholeheartedly agree.

Mango Upside Down Cake with Mount Gay Rum

Every kid's mom has produced a Pineapple Upside Down or two, usually opting for a recipe on the side of a can of Dole's, or perhaps referring to an old family recipe for guidance. But this is not your mom's upside down cake. With an overabundance of fresh mangoes in our Barbados 'garden' as the English refer to a yard, not to mention an equally ample stock of aged rum in the cupboard, it only seems natural to put the two together in a fun and festive way. This recipe serves 8 to 10 depending on how you slice it.

The key here is in the sticky stuff, or the topping if you will that is actually the bottom. First, melt 4 tablespoons of butter, ¾ cup brown sugar, 3 tablespoons of honey, and ½ cup of Mount Gay Extra Old dark rum. Reduce, stirring often, over medium heat until thickened and a bit foamy: this usually takes about 4 or 5 minutes. Pour this mixture into a buttered 9 or 10 inch pan and distribute evenly. Allow to cool slightly and sprinkle a few pinches of brown sugar over the mixture for good measure.

Arrange mango slices in a circle over the mixture, completely covering the bottom of the pan. Sprinkle a few more pinches of brown sugar on top of the mangoes.

Heat the oven to 350. Combine the flour, baking powder, cornmeal, nutmeg and salt in a bowl and set aside. Cream butter in a bowl using a hand held mixer (helpful tip: cut a piece of wax paper in a round, force the beater stems through the paper and then into the mixer---homemade splash guard!), adding sugar until blended. Add yolks and vanilla. Add a splash of rum. Add the dry ingredients and then the milk/rum until the batter is smooth—do not over beat! If any rum remains, and it is 5 o'clock somewhere in the world, pour excess into a tall glass with ice and enjoy.

Beat egg whites at low to medium speed until they form soft peaks. Gradually add 3 tablespoons of sugar and beat until stiff peaks appear. Fold the egg whites in equal batches into the cake batter until well blended. Carefully pour the batter into the pan so the fruit is not displaced. Bake for approximately 60 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool completely. Place the entire pan in the freezer for 15 minutes. Remove, slide a hot knife around the edges to loosen the cake, and place your serving platter over the pan and turn upside down. Re-arrange any fruit that wants to stay behind. As with most things, it will somehow taste better the next day after spending the night in the refrigerator. But feel free to serve immediately, or as soon as dinner is over.

As a garnish, we often marinate diced mango and diced pineapple in (yes!) more rum, mix in a little honey, and a small chiffonade of mint, and sprinkle artfully around the plate. If going for the gold, pipe dollops of whipped cream on top.

    Sticky stuff:

5 tablespoons butter, using one to grease the pan

    1 cup brown sugar

    3 tablespoons of honey

1 cup of Mount Gay Extra Old dark rum plus more for drinking

2 to 3 ripe but not soft mangoes

    De Cake

1 ½ cups all purpose floor, sifted

    1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

    3 tablespoons cornmeal

    1 tablespoon salt

    ½ teaspoon grated nutmeg

½ cup or 4oz of unsalted butter at room temperature

1 ½ cup of granulated sugar, using 3 tablespoons for the egg whites

    4 large eggs, separated

    1 ½  teaspoons vanilla extract

1/3 cup milk combined with 1/3 cup Mt Gay Extra Old rum, more if drinking but do not combine with the milk!

The Fish Pot is Michael Winner's Favourite

Every year Michael Winner spends his Christmas holiday in Barbados, staying at the world renowned Sandy Lane Hotel. It is arguably one of the most exclusive places in the world to see and be seen at that festive time of year, with room rates approaching $3,000 per nightSandy Lane with a 14 night minimum stay required. Food and drink not included. Release the hounds!

And as he does every year upon his return to London, Michael Winner publishes a Barbados Restaurant Review in the Sunday Times "Winners Dinners" column. Restaurant managers and owners are known to go into DEFCOM 3, high alert when "Winner, Sandy Lane, 444-2000" appears in their reservations book. His ascerbic (some claim cruel) wit and take no prisoners style of restaurant reviewing has both fans and detractors agreeing on one thing: you either love him or hate him.

Michael Winner has made more than 30 films in his career as a director. His best known film was probably DEATH WISH, starring Charles Bronson.  But his weekly Winner's Dinners column for The Sunday Times is how he is best known to foodie's in the UK and USA. He visits the world's top restaurants and then delivers a tell all recap of what went wrong, right or both.

In his recently published Barbados Review on February 10th, Michael Winner mentioned how the food at Sandy Lane had dipped last Christmas season.  However, he still ate 35 lunches and dinners there, only going out seven times.  One of the restaurants he visited was The Fishpot - a restaurant he had never visited in the 25 years of coming to Barbados. The Fishpot Restaurant, with its 21 room hotel across the street, is owned by Andrew and Patricia Warden. Winner declared The Fish Pot to be "absolutely terriffic..."

The CliffMr Winner was not so kind to The Cliff, calling it "that so-called great Barbados dump."  Twisting the knife, he went on to say it was "the most overbooked, second-rate place in the world." Ouch. We do not share Mr Winner's vitriol having dined there recently ourselves with friends. A bit stuffy perhaps, but we were in our own little world and tuned out the little annoyances such as having the water glasses refilled mid sip---less is more, please.  We will agree with his comment about the bored indifference cum affected attitude of the twenty something front desk staff but we found it all vaguely amusing in a WHO IS THE EMPLOYEE AND WHO IS THE CUSTOMER sort of way. All in all, more good than bad.

Daphne'sAnother restaurant to feel the wrath of his indigestion was Daphne's, sister restaurant to Daphne's in London.  Mr Winner said Daphne's "occasionally has reasonable food but the service is so slow everyone complains in high volume."  We, too, have found the service to be spotty, but GM Marco Pavone works very hard to overcome the island time mentality of some wait staff that is the Achille's heel for most Barbados restaurants. Daphne's consistently delivers quality and innovative Italianbbean cuisine and you simply can't beat the view.

But No. 1 on Mr Winner's Barbados Hit List was The Fishpot"You turn left out of Sandy Lane and drive 25 minutes, passing endless hoardings hiding upcoming apartment blocks and foreboding signs on wasteland reading, Prime residential site for sale. Eventually you come to old Barbados. There are little wooden houses, market stalls by the beach, cane fields and an aura of better times."  That is a Bajan version of MAPQUEST.  "At the Fishpot you sit right by the sea, in an old 17th-century fort. It's tranquil. It's beautiful. It's what Caribbean life should be."

Michael Winner first went for lunch with Richard Hanlon, who he says is his "favourite interior designer", and was so impressed he returned for dinner with music mogul Lucian Grainge and his wife. The Fish Pot

"For lunch the Fishpot had fresh local lobsters, which is more than Sandy Lane could offer at the time. They presented lobsters from Belize which must have been on ice so long all their spirit and structure had departed."

There is another Restaurant Review coming out shortly and we understand he talks about another of our favourite restaurants, the Lone Star. Winner has long been a fan of Lone Star but you just never know if an ill WINNER will be blowing.  We await your words, kind Sir, with bated breath.

The Times On-Line to read Michael Winner's full story.

Royal Westmoreland's New Beach Club and Spa

Royal Westmoreland has recently opened a full service restaurant and beach facility at the former Mannie's Suga Suga on Mullins Beach. The Royal Westmoreland Beach Club is designed for the use of Royal Westmoreland owners and villa renters and their guests. But the public is invited to use both the restaurant and, by appointment, the spa facilities.

Mullins Beach Bar, as the original building and business operation was named, is leased to veteran owners Sean and Raymond Gill of the famous Barbados nightclub Harbour Lights, along with Brett Clarke, who formerly managed the Mews in Holetown. Chef Ryan Dasilva, formerly of The Cliff, has developed a delicious and innovative "beach bar" menu, featuring thin crust hand made pizzas, burgers, wraps, salads, pastas, and daily specials. The bar offers arguably one of the best views in all of Barbados to compliment an extensive drink and cold beer selection. Currently open 7 days a week for lunch, the restaurant has plans to open for dinner sometime near the end of February.

    Also completely renovated is the
Indulgence Spa at Mullins Beach. The Indulgence Spa is a unique and secluded environment offering an inviting waterfall swimming pool and secret cave with luxury sun loungers and complimentary towels.  The Indulgence Spa offers an excellent range of Elemis treatments and specialises in full and half day luxury spa programmes. Specially choreographed body treatments combine Thai, Swedish and Hot Stone movements. All body and facial treatments use exclusive Elemis products that are also available for purchase. By appointment.

Royal Westmoreland's owner and management team advises visitors not to block the thoroughfare along Mullins Road by parking on both sides of the street, and to exercise caution when crossing the road from the parking lot.

After nearly two years of Government sponsored renovations, the "new" Oistins Friday Night Fish Fry has returned to its original seaside location. Food Stalls at the Oistins Fish FrySituated directly beside the open air Oistins Fish Market, the colorful new buildings which house numerous food and drink vendors, craftsmen and artists are a perfect setting for the lively and high energy crowd who casually stroll the grounds in search of the best rum punch, fish cakes, and grilled fish. Loudspeakers are blaring Calypso tunes and before you know it happy feet take over as conga lines are formed with young and old alike swaying to the rhythm on the brightly lit center stage.

Wood fueled grills---"coal pots" in Bajan vernacular--- fill the air with incredible aromas of Bajan seasoned red snapper, flying fish, dolphin, swordfish, and barracuda. Or try bill fish Cooking on the Coal Potor steak fish, tuna or marlin. The fish seemingly so fresh as to be proverbially still swimming. Marinated and slow cooked barbequed chicken lazily falls of the bone. Sides of breadfruit, peas and rice, macaroni pie, and salads compliment the fare in a casual, find a picnic table style dining where communal tables are the norm. Bottles of the mustard yellow Bajan pepper sauce dot each table innocently waiting to sting the tongues of the unknowing or to provoke an upper lip bead of sweat for the true believers. Not to worry as the ubiquitous vendors with their marine coolers filled with ice cold beer and island concoctions are always at your beckon.

The atmosphere is straight out of a Graham Greene novel: sunburned, bead wearing, flip-flopped tourists mix effortlessly with the ever-smiling local crowd, all in search of a good Red Snapper Bar & Grillnight on the town. The family friendly, clean and modern facilities are a welcome transformation from the Oistins of old. While some may favor nostalgia over change, Oistins was in danger of losing the plot several years ago when a less than attractive young local crowd fostered a menacing vibe with their foul language, ear drum splitting cacophony of incompatible music and, at times, lewd behavior. But those days are now fading unpleasant memories as a sea of laughter and wholesome food and drink now greets the never-ending stream of tourists arriving by H car and taxis. A brigade of uniformed Barbados policeman stand crisp and regally nearby should trouble even think of rearing its head.Picnic table dining at the Red Snapper stall Young children dance with proud mums and dads, everyone fitting into place at the Oistins Fish Fry where the only rules are the ones Golden and to have a good time.

While Oistins is open 7 days a week, Friday night is the traditional festive party atmosphere associated with Oistins. Some shops, such as Lexie's, are open during the day. Food at night is available from approximately 6 pm onward. Prices vary, but generally expect to pay Bds $15.00 to $20.00 per plate of food (US$ 7.50 to $10.00). A real bargain by Barbados standards. Take the time to walk around The Young and the Oldand enjoy the hand crafted necklaces, shells, hand made shoes from the Rastas, and a bargainer's delight of interesting local art. Feel free to ask for a 'better price' as everything is negotiable. The vendors all proclaim that they offer the BEST fish or chicken and their touts will attempt to direct you to sample that particular hut. But don't feel pressured as most offerings are of a consistent quality and similar menu. One caveat: if so inclined, ask whether the rum punch is 'proper rum punch' or homemade versus a store bought mix. You'll be viewed as a local who knows a thing or two about their rum punch!

Cassareep Cafe on the Beach - a Hidden Gem

One of the many reasons clients seek out our services and advice is to find that out-of-central-casting tropical location that is made famous by Corona beer Entrance to Cassareep Cafecommercials and travel magazine ads. It is with mixed emotions that our secret spot is now being "discovered" by locals and visitors alike.

Cassareep Cafe is the perfect afternoon spot for a peaceful, lazy lunch.  Grab a quick bite to eat, or a coffee, either inside the air conditioned cafe, or do what we did - step outside onto the beach front deck and sit under the trees overlooking the beach and sea. The orientation of the outside dining area belies the fact that the cafe location is in the heart of Speightstown, arguably Barbados' third largest city. You feel as though you're sitting on the Belmont Walkway in laid back Bequia or on a picnic at a remote stretch of beach.

A delicious and well conceived menu offers breakfast along with daily lunch specials, together with rotis, pepperpot, curries, kebabs, pasta, sandwiches and wraps.  Compliment your meal with tropical smoothies and LaVazza coffee drinks. British Navy Visits Barbados

A number of British sailors on a recent visit to Barbados undertook a Elaine Hinkson & members of the clean up teamcommunity project when they carried out extensive repairs to the home of an elderly St Michael woman.

The group of 15 from the HMS Ocean was led by visit liaison officer for Barbados, Lieutenant-Commander Jude Terry. It took two days to clear the yard of 83-year-old Elaine Hinkson, of No. 8, Field Place, Bayville.

The sailors cleaned up the termite-infested area, did landscaping, painted the front and back of the house and replaced a window.

Capt & Mrs Peter MorganThey were made aware of Hinkson's plight through the Barbados Legion and the British High Commission.

Organiser of the team, Mick Pickup, said Hinkson's roof was beyond repair and it would have to be replaced. He notified Assistant Defence Advisor Dave Hatfield about the matter. Hinkson, a member of the Chapman Street Church of God, has been living in the area for about 42 years.

"I was waiting for the house to be repaired for so long that I can't remember," she said. She shared the house with her husband who died in 1999.

Chef Winston on the BBQThis heartwarming story appeared in THE NATION newspaper and high praise is due to not only the men and women from the HMS Ocean who participated in the actual refurbishment of Mrs. Hinkson's home, but also to Captain Peter Morgan, the Defence Advisor, Eastern Caribbean, who is currently attached to the British High Commission, Bridgetown, Barbados. His behind the scenes research, organization, and implementation of this and upcoming projects deserves special recognition. Captain Morgan and his wife Julie have called Barbados home since November, 2006.

     Poolside service.jpg

Peter and Julie Morgan have hosted several 'Welcome to Barbados' elegant BBQs at their beautiful home. Local dignitaries and residents mixed casually with the British Navy personnel and guests. The poolside epicurean's delight featured marinated rib eye steak, mango barbeque chicken, and sesame tuna steaks, accompanied by an assortment of salads and sides. A crowd favorite was our Blue Cheese macaroni pie, a unique twist on the local staple. The dessert choice of Mt Gay Dark Rum and Kahlua brownies or guava cheesecake proved too tempting with most guests who ended up choosing both!

    Crop Over in Barbados

Crop Over is Barbados' very own Carnival, a festival celebrating the end of the local sugar cane crop harvest - hence its name.  Commencing in July, Crop Over lasts for Kadooment1.jpgapproximately 5 weeks, culminating in Grand Kadooment Day on the first Monday in August.  It is a national holiday and without question the biggest party day of the year.

Crop Over's origins can be traced back to the 1780's, a time when Barbados was the world's largest producer of sugar.  It was resurrected in 1974 from a multi-decade hibernation that began in the 1940's due to hardships of the time and the world war.  Since then, it has grown steadily into the island's premiere event.

If you have never experienced Grand Kadooment Day, then you've been missing out on one of the island's greatest parties. A summer street carnival filled with groups of masquerade bands with thousands of costumed revelers dancing, or "jumping up" in the streets to the pulsating sounds of the most DSCN8103.JPGpopular calypso and soca music.  Kadooment is a Barbadian term meaning a "big occasion".

Colour, culture and heritage (tuk bands, land ship, stilt-walkers), music (calypso, tuk, ring bang and steelpan), alcohol (our local Banks Beer and rum) along with energy, friendly spirited people and fantastic summer weather, are all combined to create Barbados' ultimate festival.

Some of the highlights of the action packed festival include:

Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes and the Crowning of the King and Queen of the Crop:
A ceremony where the harvest is officially pronounced closed and the most productive male and female cane cutters of the season are crowed King and Queen respectively.

    Weekly Calypso Tent shows:
Performances by local entertainers, comedians and calypsonians, showcasing the latest songs of the season varying from commentaries relating to recent local and regional happenings to party hits encouraging acrobatic dance steps and positions.

    Daily Fetes:
Arguably the most unproductive period on the Barbadian calendar, parties start each day with after-work limes and graduate to full blown bashments by 11:30 pm lasting to day break the next day. Hangovers are a common side effect during the first week, while your body adjusts to the increased levels of adrenaline and alcohol.

Some of the popular places to go to are "Wuh dah da", "The Ship Inn", "Harbour Lights" and "The Boartyard". You can also check with costume bands for their band fetes. Popular ones include Power X 4 and Baje International.

Junior Kadooment Parade and Junior Calypso Monarch Competition:
The kids get their own special kadooment as well.  There's a calypso competition and Kiddies Kadooment which is a parade of the little ones "playing mas".

Pic-O-De-Crop Semi Finals and Party Monarch Calypso competition:

From a line up of 18, 7 must be selected at the Pic-O-De-Crop Semi Finals competition to compete against the reigning Calypso king at the Pic-O-De-Crop Calypso competition.

Hosted on the slopes of the untouched Chalk hills of St. Andrew, overlooking the breaking surf of the Atlantic, if you enjoy good music, liming and picnicking this event is for you.

    The Pic-O-De-Crop Calypso competition:
This competition is strongly supported by locals and is the climax of weeks of performances by the 8 finalists, who will contend for the year's crown and top prizes.

    Fore-day Morning Jump Up:
A recent addition to the vibrant blend of festive activities, probably borrowed from Trinidad's carnival, Fore-Day Morning Jump Up is an early morning "Jump Up", following the selection of the new King of Pic-O-De-Crop Calypso competition.

It usually starts from the Bridgetown and makes its way to Spring Garden. It is a common practice for participants to paint themselves with oils and body paints. A word to the wise: Don't wear white or anything you cherish!

    Bridgetown Market:

Held on Saturday and Sunday, Bridgetown Market is a large, street fair focused on the exhibition and marketing of local art and craft, talent, music, cuisine and beverages.  It's a wonderful opportunity to pick up unique, hard to find souvenirs, art work and sample the rich pool of talent born of the island.

    Cohobblopot:
The Kings and Queens of the year's costume bands are given an opportunity to show off their dazzling and elaborate costumes, to the sounds of the latest local calypso hits, while competing for prizes and the titles of King and Queen of the Festival.

    Grand Kadooment:
The grand climax of the festival; this is a spectacular street procession of bands of costumed revelers, accompanied by huge trucks packing elaborate and deafening sound systems and tons of beverages.

    Concorde's G-BOAE Retired in Barbados

It was three and a half years in the making, but at last G-BOAE, the final Concorde to fly supersonically over the Atlantic, has opened for public tours at the Grantley Adams Airport in Barbados.

The Barbados Concorde Experience, as it has been named, has been developed to provide Barbadians and visitors alike with an educational and learning experience, not only about aviation history generally, but also about the role and development the Concorde played in shaping history during the 20th Century.

British Airways started their scheduled service to Barbados from London on December 12th 1987.  And in late 1988, Concorde would fly from New York to Barbados over a four week period, making Barbados the only destination in the world to get Concorde services from both sides of the Atlantic.

Over the next 15 years, the airline would operate a weekly Saturday flight throughout the UK winter, when UK based celebrities and VIP's would jet off in search of some winter sun.  During Christmas and New Years three or four flights a week were not uncommon, either scheduled services or charters. One day has seen two British Airways and one Air France Concorde on the ramp at the same time!  Later on the airline added a weekly service in the August peak holiday month.  It is also a known fact that some passengers would fly to Barbados 'for breakfast at Sandy Lane.'

Barbados played a large part in the success of British Airways' Concorde services, adding significantly to the airline's profits.

The last scheduled supersonic flight from Barbados was on August 30th, 2003 and passengers were sent off in grand style through a trumpeted guard of honour by the Royal Barbados Police Band.

Of the seven supersonic jets owned by British Airways, four will be kept in Britain, two in the United States and the final one, Alpha-Echo, in Barbados.

Alpha-Echo is housed in a 28,000 square foot temporary hanger at the airport.  The Barbados Concorde Experience includes a number of multi-media shows, an in-flight experience, an events centre, a virtual flight school and a gift centre.

    A Tour of Barbados Beaches

Barbados is surrounded by over 70 miles of glorious, palm fringed, white sand beaches, with warm, sparkling waters in just about every shade of blue imaginable.

There are four main regions for beach-goers: the rural North and East coasts meet the Atlantic Ocean where huge waves crash along the shore and coral reefs; the touristy South that keeps humming at all hours and with seas of gentle waves for body and wind surfing and tumbling in the water; the 'Platinum' west coast with its tranquil beaches, calm waters with a soft sandy bottom, expensive hotels and villas; and a rugged South-East that somehow combines the elements of them all.

There are no nude or topless beaches in Barbados and all beaches are open to the public.   Barbados has a conservative British tradition and Barbadians are not comfortable undressing or seeing others undress on public beaches.

Selling goods to tourists on the beach is a regulated practice.  Vendors are not permitted to roam the beach and set up shop out of a carrying case ' although they do! While some vendors are persistent in an attempt  to sell their wares, a polite but firm No Thank You will send them away. Most of Barbados' favourite beaches are patrolled by police, but they cannot be everywhere and like the rest of the world,  it is prudent not to leave valuables unattended.

Beware of the poisonous manchineel trees (usually marked with a red ring around the trunk) and its green/yellow 'apples' found on many of the West Coast beaches.  Do not eat the apples or shelter from the rain under these trees as the water dripping from the leaves can produce severe blisters to the skin.

Here are some of our favourite beaches:-

    North Coast

River Bay ' a magnificently beautiful bay that is not well-suited for swimming.  Rough seas, serious undertow and large waves dominate this beach most of the year, but it is certainly very picturesque.

Little Bay - another picturesque bay, popular amongst locals during the weekends.  Safe swimming close to the shore but we advise that you swim only when you see the locals swimming, and stay close to the shore.

    East Coast

Cattlewash and Bathsheba  ' the magnificent East Coast is full of many unexplored places and wonderful picnic spots, however, you cannot swim here.  Miles of untouched, windswept coastline along the island's most rugged and stunning coastline, this is the Atlantic in its full glory, with the biggest waves and dangerous undercurrents.  Cattlewash is by far the longest beach on the island and is often deserted.  It is a popular sightseeing and relaxing spot.  This beach was christened 'Cattlewash' as it was the bathing spot in the olden days for herds of cattle which were shepherded down from the hills from neighbouring villages.  South of Cattlewash is Bathsheba, where the world renowned surf spot known as 'Soup Bowl' is host to many national and international surfing events.

Tent Bay ' a 'suburb' of Bathsheba, the shore is lined with boats and there is a small fish market.  South of Tent Bay is Martin's Bay and then Bath.

Bath ' one of the few truly 'safe' swimming beaches along the entire Atlantic side.  A lifeguard is usually on duty and there is lots of shade with parking, changing, picnic and eating facilities.  Medium to small waves and a slight undertow close to shore.  Best swimming is off to the left of the beach bar.

    South-East Coast

Harrismith ' just north of Bottom Bay.  Park by the old ruin at the top of the cliff and go down the long flight of steps to the beach.  At low tide there are areas of shallow pools between the rocks.  Do not go beyond the reef which lies at the shoreline as the currents tend to be very strong.

Bottom Bay ' located just north of the famed Sam Lord's Castle, this is a bay protected by jagged cliffs.  Park on the cliff top and go down the steps.  An isolated, wide sandy beach lined with coconut palms, brisk breezes and sparkling aquamarine sea is everyone's dream of the perfect island beach.  First class picnic venue and a popular backdrop for film shoots, weddings and ad campaigns.  Medium waves with a slight undertow.

Beachy Head ' if it is low tide, you can walk from the Crane beach to Ginger Bay beach and then through to Beach Head.  Otherwise, you will have to drive.  Both beaches are set between limestone coral boulders and a cave.  They are both tantalizingly deserted.

Crane Beach ' was originally a harbour and is probably Barbados' most famous beach.  The name 'Crane' was derived from the large crane situated at the top of the cliff which was used for loading and unloading ships.  Its pink sand and the Doric columns at The Crane Resort pool, perched 50 feet above, are a frequent backdrop for ad campaigns.  With its rugged cliffs, rolling dunes, fresh steady breezes and incredible turquoise water it is truly a spectacular sight.  Excellent body surfing and boogie boarding conditions.  Boogie boards, umbrellas and beach chairs are available for rent on the beach.  If you park at the hotel there is a Bds$25 entrance fee redeemable at the bar or restaurant.  Alternatively, you can park in the cul-de-sac at the far end of the beach and walk the rest of the way.

Foul Bay ' about half a kilometer from the Crane Hotel, take the turning sign-posted 'Public Access to Foul Bay Beach' - home to a small fleet of local fishing boats.  A long, wide, open expanse of beach on a ruggedly attractive stretch of coastline.  Care should be taken when swimming as the waves are big and they break onshore.  There can be a strong undertow at times.  There are some shady areas with picnic tables and benches, and even a shower to rinse off under before heading home.

    South Coast

Long Beach ' north of Silver Sands is Long Beach, a two-mile long stretch of undisturbed beach and the lengthiest single beach on the island.  The beach and its dunes are fine for a stroll (although something of a debris magnet) but the waves can be daunting for swimmers.  Enter via the Long Beach Club, enjoy a cocktail or cold Banks beer and a flying fish sandwich at the bar, and then take a walk down to the beach.

Silver Sands and Silver Rock ' the island's top windsurfing spot, nestled between South Point, the southernmost tip of the island, and Inch Marlowe Point.  These beautiful beaches are a quarter mile stretch of white sand with a constant stiff breeze--excellent conditions for windsurfing (particularly intermediate and advanced), wave riding and kite surfing.  This is the location where many international windsufing events are held because the wind and wave conditions are so ideal.

Miami Beach ' also known as Enterprise Beach, not far from Oistins.  This is the prettiest beach on the south coast and popular among the locals, especially on weekends.  Away from most hotels, you are almost free from the beach vendors plying their trade. It is a picturesque slice of pure white sand with cliffs on each end of the beach showcasing the crystal clear water. You can find a palm-shaded parking area and snack carts or take your own picnic lunch.  Or we'd suggest you have lunch at Café Luna at Little Arches hotel next door.

Dover Beach ' a lovely expanse of beach with good swimming conditions and small to medium sized waves.  Not very large, but the beach does extend west into Maxwell Beach, which is nearly as lovely.  Ideal for body surfing, wind surging and boogie boarding.  Hobie cats, kayaks, lounge chairs and umbrellas are available for rental. A popular beach as it is fronted by hotels that cater to families.

Rockley Beach (or Accra) ' a long stretch of beach and one of the most popular among locals and visitors.   Good for body surfing and body watching.  Boogie boards and beach chairs are available for rental.  Several vendors ply their wares here, including snack bars, and the beach has public changing facilities.  Waves are moderate, not too much undertow, and it is always a busy, active beach.

    West Coast

Brighton Beach ' walk from Paradise Beach to Brighton Beach, home of the Malibu Beach Club where Day Passes are available for tours of the Rum Distillery.  Beach chairs and umbrellas are available for rent.

Batts Rock-Paradise Beach ' take the track on the right shortly after Calabaza restaurant and drive down to the parking area to Batts Rock.  A placid beach with calm waters most of the year.  Lots of shady trees, a small children's playground, picnic tables, shower and changing facilities.  Popular amongst the locals, so very few beach vendors.  The Four Seasons hotel is being constructed on Paradise Beach.

Paynes Bay ' centrally located just south of Sandy Lane, this beach is lined with luxury hotels and villas.  It gets crowded but it is one of the best equipped beaches in Barbados for renting a hobie cat or kayak.  Great for snorkeling and swimming.  Lunch and drinks are available from the Coach House opposite.

Sandy Lane Bay ' the beach of Sandy Lane, the island's most opulent five star hotel.  A long, wide expanse of beach that is in pristine condition and well-maintained.  There is a public access to this beach at the south end of the hotel.  As it sits on something of a bay, the beach is nicely sheltered with little wave movement most of the year and no undertow.

Holetown ' in the middle of Holetown, opposite the Super Centre shopping mall and behind the Post Office and Police Station is Surfside Beach Bar which sits on a lovely stretch of beach with lots of shady areas.  There is also a vendors market here with locally made sarongs, shirts and dresses, as well as locally made jewellery.

Gibbs Beach ' a beautiful crescent beach, quiet and perfect for snorkeling and swimming, with very few beach vendors and jet skis.  Lots of trees for shade.  On Sundays the bay is a popular spot for the local boats and yachts to anchor for the day.

Mullins Beach ' from Gibbs Beach you can walk north over to Mullins beach, one of the most popular beaches for renting watersports equipment. Great for swimming and snorkeling, and there is Mannie's Suga Suga beach bar for cold beers and lunch.  Good picnic spot but it gets busy on weekends.

Port St Charles - just south of the entrance to Port St Charles, or just north of the entrane, is a public access to the beach.

The Kids Can Have Fun in Barbados

When taking the kids with you on holiday it is important to find exciting things for them to do.  Of course there is the beach, where hours can be spent playing in the sand or surfing the waves, but there will be days when you want to do something different, or simply want a break from the sun.

Catamaran sailing and swimming with the turtles

There are several catamaran trips available but we like Cool Runnings.  They offer a lunch cruise from 9:30am to 2:30pm.   Price includes pick up from villa, drinks, lunch and two snorkeling stops, one of which allows you to feed and swim with the turtles.

    US$75 adults / US$$37.50 children 2-12

    Highland Adventure Centre

Bicycle and horseback riding tours, plus shorter hikes for the children.  Also, paddock rides on retired thoroughbred horses, a children's playground, and zoo with monkeys, sheep, mongoose, peacocks, and rabbits.  Great location for children's parties and events.

    Harrison's Cave

(currently closed for renovations and will re-open in April 2007 for Cricket World Cup, after April, Harrison's Cave will be closed again until Winter 2007)

With an abundance of stalactites, stalagmites, streams, lakes and waterfalls, leading speleologists consider it to be among the finest showcases in the world.

The Caves are located near the geographical centre of Barbados, in the parish of St. Thomas and is a natural phenomenon affording an experience unique in the tropical world.

The trip starts with a short video of Barbados and its geology.  You then climb into a special tram, taking a ride through the exciting subterranean stream passages.

First mentioned in historical documents in 1795, the caves were virtually forgotten for nearly two centuries until Barbadian Tony Mason and Danish speleologist Ole Sorensen "rediscovered" them in 1976.

In 1981, Harrison's Cave was officially opened to the public as a "show" cave, giving visitors an opportunity to view a variety of natural features unique to the geophysical structure of Barbados.

Now Barbados' number one attraction, Harrison's Cave truly is a unique experience that should not be missed during your Barbados vacation.

    Welchman Hall Gully
Welchman Hall Gully is hidden away in the centre of the island, not far from Harrison's Cave. Everywhere there is rock, the same limestone, and former coral reefs, that have been pushed up from under the sea. The difference is that at Welchman Hall the roof collapsed and the cavern has been turned into a gully - there are even a few old stalactites on view there. It meanders for several hundred yards, with walls a hundred and fifty feet high either side.

As you walk there is a series of numbered signs with descriptions of plants. Some have gone missing, but there are enough to retain your interest. Coconut palms, royal palms, trumpet trees, ferns and creepers. There are some 200 species in the gully.

    Glass Bottom Boat Trip
You can pick one up anywhere along the West Coast.  Cruising over reefs and turtle spotting.

Drive over to the East Coast
The Island's most scenic drive is the East Coast Road, an eye-catching stretch of undeveloped beach. Breaking waves and a rocky coast are on one side of the road, and banana plantations, mango trees, cane fields and green hills are on the other side. Driving here gifts us with a sense of space. The East Coast Road is unmarred by hotels, condominiums or big restaurants. The sunlit seascape, lush green fields, and the sound of crashing waves energize us.

The big boulders on the beach signal Bathsheba, also called the "Soup Bowl," a favorite spot for accomplished surfers.

    Barbados Museum

The Barbados Museum, located at the Garrison in St Michael, is housed in the former British Military Prison. The prison, whose upper section was built in 1817 and lower section in 1853, became the headquarters of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society in 1930.

Of educational interest is a visit to the Barbados Museum for an Exhibition entitled 'Yesterday's Children.' This is an entire gallery completely dedicated to children and provides an exciting and educational travel back into history.

Some of the main displays and features of the Barbados Museum are:

    • A natural history display that describes the coral structure of Barbados.
    • Artifacts of the Amerindians, the early inhabitants of the Caribbean islands.
    • Furnishings of an eighteenth century plantation house.
    • A collection of rare historical maps of the island.
    • A reference library which is available for research on the island's history and genealogy.

Opening hours: 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, 2pm -6pm Sunday.

    US$5.75 adults / $2.88 children 5-16

Mount Gay Rum is America's Favorite

MOUNT GAY RUM has officially been deemed the favorite rum of America's "rich and famous."

Less than two weeks into the new year, the world-renowned Barbadian rum was adjudged the winner of the 2007 Luxury Institute Luxury Brand Status Index (LBSI) survey for premium rum.

The Luxury Institute, America's most respected luxury goods and services rating agency for wealthy consumers, conferred the award on the Mount Gay brand after respondents definitively ranked it above some of the well-known brands in the industry, including Bacardi, Captain Morgan, Castillo and Myers'.

From the independent votes of 1,200 wealthy consumers, each representing an average household income of US$340,000 and average net worth of US$2.7 million, Mount Gay ranked highest in three of the four component indices: "consistently superior quality; uniqueness and exclusivity; and consumption by those who are admired and respected".

According to the institution, Mount Gay was also deemed the most recommended brand, with respondents considering the Barbadian liquor the "finest of Caribbean rums" and the one most worthy of a price premium.

Speaking shortly after the announcement of the award, Peter Marshall, sales and marketing director of Mount Gay Distilleries Ltd, said the company was honored by the approval of its high-end clientele.

"Mount Gay has been producing high-quality liquors for more than three centuries," he said, "and during that time we have built a reputation for consistency and superior quality in markets from the Caribbean and Latin America to Europe and the United States."

It's Polo Season Again in Barbados

Nothing matches an afternoon of polo in the tropical surroundings of Barbados.  Beautiful ladies in haute couture, squired by an array of dashing men, gather to watch the sport of kings while sipping champagne amidst the sound of hoof beat.  There is also afternoon tea, a fully stocked bar --- or in Bajan parlance, 'bar solid' --- and most often a delicious Bajan buffet is served. It is truly an afternoon of civilized fun for the international set.  you might even bump into our Prime Minister.

Once a local pastime enjoyed by a few enthusiasts, the game of polo is now an important and well respected event on international sporting and social calendars.  Not to be played by the faint of heart, polo is a very enthralling spectator sport.  Apart from interclub matches which start in January, there is a 14 goal Colombian Emeralds Barbados Open in March this year, as well as visits from teams from South Africa, Argentina, the USA and England.

The quality and profile of Barbados polo as improved over the years with much better facilities being offered.  Apart from the Barbados Polo Club at Holders Hill, three new polo fields have opened at Waterhall, Lion Castle and Clifton, all of which offer breathtaking views over rural Barbados.  The influx and recruitment of top quality, high handicap overseas players has given the local teams the opportunity to play alongside some high quality polo players.  The polo ponies have also improved significantly, most of which have been imported from well-known polo breeding countries like Argentina.

The Barbados Polo season runs from January to May this year. Click here to see this season's schedule.

    Delicious Guava Recipes from Barbados

December in Barbados is guava time. Our tree is raining guavas, a bright yellow fruit with a taste that is part pear, part strawberry and resembles a large lemon in appearance. Second only to the blueberry in antioxidant power, the guava is a nutritional powerhouse containing more than 5 times the vitamin C of an orange. It is also loaded with the cancer fighting nutrient lycopene.

There are dozens of varieties of the guava family. Our local Barbados guava is an Apple guava, known scientifically as Psidium Guajava. Locals usually wash the fruit and eat it whole, rinds and seeds. Others may choose to cut the fruit in half and its pulp can be scooped out with a spoon; the seeds are completely edible. We harvest the prolific fruit each morning, scooping out the inside and freezing it for future use in our cheesecakes, jams, chutneys, and sauces. The remaining rinds are washed and then boiled down, adding a 1 to 1 (1 cup of rind to 1 cup of sugar) mixture of rind to sugar, along with 2 tablespoons of fresh lime juice. The resulting ambrosia can be used as a topping for ice cream or as a base for guava bread.

At a recent catering, a guava reduction was used as a base for an absolutely delicious combination of boneless duck breast and guava coulis. Below are a few of our favorite guava recipes:

Pan Seared Duck Breast with Guava Coulis:

For the duck breast, score the skin into 1/4 intervals (do not cut into breast meat).
Rotate breast and score again making a criss-cross pattern. Season w salt/pepper.

Add Duck Breast skin side down to an ungreased preheated 325 degree skillet.

Allow to cook about 10 minutes until skin is crisp and brown. Turn breasts over and cook another 2-3 minutes.

Add 4 oz Chicken Stock (preferably homemade), cover pan tightly and cook another 2-5 minutes to preference---we prefer to cook the duck until medium rare.

Remove breast from skillet and let rest 5-10 minutes before slicing.

For the Guava Coulis, boil 10 whole guavas, cut in half, in 1 cup of water for 8 minutes or until soft. Allow to cool, and then puree the mixture in a blender until smooth. Strain the seed from the pulp and return to a sauce pan. Over medium heat, add 1 cup of sugar, ½ cup of white vinegar, 1 teaspoon of salt, and a dash of hot pepper sauce. Heat for approximately 10 minutes or until slightly thickened.

Serve with Grilled Zucchini and Sweet Potato Mash.

Ham Panini with Guava Cream Cheese:

    Ingredients:
Any bread may be used for this recipe, but we prefer to use a fresh baguette.
Ham (we use Boars Head brand)
    Gruyere cheese
    Sauteed onions
Guava cream cheese (mix 2 tablespoons of the above guava base with 4 oz of cream cheese)

    Method:
Assemble the above ingredients. If using a panini grill, simply grill for 3 minutes or until golden brown. In a frying pan, lightly brush the top and bottom with extra virgin olive oil and place in a medium hot pan. Press down with either a spatula or you can use a smaller diameter frying pan. Turn over and repeat until both sides are browned.

    Guava Smoothie:

Combine 2 tablespoons of the guava base with 3 large scoops of coconut ice cream (or ice cream of your choice), 1/2 cup of whole milk, and a dash of fresh nutmeg. Blend until smooth. A favorite variation is to add 2 ounces of Mt Gay Extra Old Rum for a truly refreshing after dinner drink!

    The Terrace at Cobblers Cove

The Terrace at Cobblers Cove - A Truly Delicious Secret

Cobblers Cove, a member of the prestigious Relais and Chateau association, is one of Barbados' most exclusive hotels.  Located on the northern end of the West Coast, this first class hotel, a favourite of chic, in-the-know travelers, is creating a huge buzz on the Barbados dining scene.  General Manager Ross Stevenson, known for his super human attention to detail, has collaborated with Australian born chef, Mathew Knight to offer a splendid menu of epicurean delights. BarbadosBarbados.com recently visited The Terrace and Oh what a meal!

A highly original ham hock and poultry terrine with an accompanying tomato/date relish was a fantastic hit with our party. Equally impressive was the Angus beef carpaccio with quail eggs and truffle oil. The starters are eclectic and well crafted and offer several selections of local fish and seafood, in addition to a distinctive collection of soups and salads.

Our main course selection was fraught with indecision as the choices are all tempting and refreshingly unique to the standard Barbados menu offerings. Barracuda, duck, lamb, beef, and pork came with such diverse sides and sauces as aubergine caviar, salsify, cauliflower purée and beignet, carrot butter, or salsa verde. The meal was paced to perfection in a leisurely yet highly efficient manner by a well trained and friendly staff.

Desserts are an art form as spun sugar sculptures meets sweet tooth decadence. We loved the crème brulée served out of the ramekin with caramel dipped baby apples. A wide range of after dinner coffee, tea, and liqueurs are also available. Insider tip: take your night cap by the pool where you'll feel as though you're at a friend's seaside home.

It is a well known fact that getting a table at any of the popular, trendy restaurants on the West Coast is difficult at best, especially during high season. And although our other favored restaurants generally stay the course and maintain a high standard of service despite being at full capacity, we enjoyed the more relaxed atmosphere at The Terrace where the lush manicured gardens segue into the moonlit sea. We highly recommend The Terrace at Cobblers Cove for lunch and dinner. Reservations suggested. 422-2291.

    Medical Care in Barbados

    Medical Care in Barbados

While most people visit Barbados for a relaxing holiday in the sun, the realities of life often come into play when medical assistance is needed.  This was in the international spotlight recently when emergency medical assistance was required of the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair and his wife Cherie's son Euan.

It is important to have a plan in case of a medical emergency during your stay in Barbados.  Ambulances can often take up to one hour to reach your location, especially if you are on the busy West Coast.

Barbados is fortunate to have highly skilled medical personnel but those practitioners often do not have access to state of the art equipment.  With few exceptions, the medical expertise and bedside manner of Barbados' physicians is on a World class level. It is highly recommended for those visiting Barbados to be proactive in selecting a course of action should the need arise.

    What are your choices?

The Government owned Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) is Barbados' only full service hospital, with intensive care facilities, located just outside of the capital Bridgetown.  It also has a reciprocal arrangement for British nationals on the National Health Service (NHS) scheme, where you would be treated and cared for in a Public Ward.  Be advised that QEH is often crowded and the wait can be long and sometimes frustrating if your medical needs are not deemed to be of immediate attention. Telephone 436-6450 or 511 for emergency dispatch.

FMH Emergency Medical Clinic is a private accident and emergency medical centre.  Located in Belleville, St Michael, this facility offers X-ray, MRI and care for serious but not life threatening injuries. FMH is open from 8 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. and will handle most emergencies or refer patients to the QEH as needed.  Telephone 228-6120.

BayView Hospital, a privately owned and operated facility, with seven private rooms and four four-bed semi-private rooms, has been operational since 1989.  Situated on the outskirts of Bridgetown and within close proximity of many leading hotels, BayView Hospital offers private non-emergency medical care in a variety of fields including cardiology, dentistry, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery and urology. However, you must be admitted under the specific care of a physician who holds admitting privileges at this hospital.  Please call 436 5446, or visit their website BayViewHospital.com.bb for more information.

A new state of the art, privately owned facility has opened its doors on the West Coast - Sandy Crest Medical Centre in Sunset Crest, St James.  This ultra-modern complex offers 24 hour comprehensive emergency and non-emergency care service, x-ray, ultra-sounds, CT technology (by the end of the year), access to an ambulance service, 24-hour pharmacy access, as well as an asthma bay.  This emergency clinic has employed the services of five of the island's leading emergency room practitioners, one for every shift.  Please call 419-4911, or visit their web site SandyCrest.net (under construction) for more information.

The island has two private ambulance services, Island Care Ambulance (246) 435 9425, and Get Help Ambulance Service (246) 438 4357, and the QEH Ambulance Service (246) 436 6450 or 511, all of which are located in the Bridgetown area.  However, there is a QEH Ambulance service out of the Arch Hall Fire Station in St Thomas, to service the West/North coast of the island. In extreme cases, patients will be air-ambulanced to either Canada or the USA.

Will You Marry Me? A Barbados Wedding

Except in a melancholy connection, you seldom hear about love and true, old fashioned romance any more. But this was not the case with Steven Butler and his soon-to-be bride, Kate Watson, both from Manchester, England. This is a true love story, straight from a romance novel about a man sweeping a woman off of her feet.

What will undoubtedly be included in this year's top ten list of romantic wedding proposals, BarbadosBarbados.com was chosen to orchestrate the setting and location for Steven's proposal of marriage on the tiny, uninhabited island of Mopion in the Grenadines, a chain of small islands which are a part of the sovereign island nation of St. Vincent.

Here is Steven and Kate's story.

Steven first contacted us to inquire about a limousine and restaurant recommendation for a very special evening, as well as to get a few insider tips about Barbados in general. His girlfriend Kate was a frequent visitor to the island; Steven's visit would be his first. Steven was under enormous pressure to find a setting that didn't fall into the been-there-done-that category for Kate. Steven was sure of WHAT he wanted to do, but a little unsure of HOW he wanted to do it. His only criterion was that his proposal of marriage to Kate had to be nothing short of spectacular!

Several options were discussed and tossed about, until we suggested that a day trip to the Grenadines aboard a Chantours charter, a mere 30 minute plane ride away, was perhaps one of the most idyllic settings on earth to ask for her hand in marriage.

The challenge, however, was to keep everyone - from the boat captain, to the taxi driver to the other six guests on board ' in on the secret without letting on to Kate.

After numerous emails and telephone calls, a plan was set into motion.

First, Steven requested a bottle of champagne to be on board Chantours' 45 ft luxury catamaran, Flagship, ready for the celebrations. Next, it was arranged that Captain Bagga would take the couple over to the remote island of Mopion in his row boat. Once there, Steven professed his love for Kate and then, down on his knee, took her hand and placed a ring on her finger, asking the much anticipated question,' Kate, will you marry me?' Speechless at first, Kate finally blurted out 'of course I will!'

In dreamlike surroundings, seemingly as far away from civilization and the modern world as could be imagined, a marriage was born.

Later that evening, we arranged for a luxury car ride, complete with chilled champagne, and the best seaside table at the world famous restaurant The Cliff, in order for Steven and Kate to celebrate the start of their new life together.

We met up with Kate and Stephen for sunset cocktails at the Sandy Lane Hotel and heard their story. In almost comic opera, Steven told of trying to keep the ring hidden from Kate on the flight over to Barbados, and how he deftly managed to hide it in his short's pocket to take on the Grenadines trip. And of surreptitiously trying to get away from Kate for just a moment to chat with Captain Bagga and tell him of his plan. All the while, lets not to forget, after traveling half way around the world, that Kate would say yes!

All in all, they said it was the most perfect experience they could have ever imagined. The entire day was absolutely perfect and everyone co-operated, including the weather, to make this a once in a life time fantasy proposal, along with a lifetime of memories of their special day in the Caribbean.

We wish Steve and Kate all the very best for their future.

    The Blairs at Sandalo

Food Affairs is proud to have recently catered an event at Sandalo, the lavishly appointed beach front luxury villa owned by John and Stephanie Hawkins, who also reside in Berkshire, England. Guests of honor were British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife Cherie and family, who have made Barbados their family holiday destination for the last four years. The relaxed pool side setting with a moonlit view of the sea, accompanied by the soft sounds of live entertainment provided the perfect backdrop for this casually elegant affair.

Canapes of local cucumber crowns with smoked salmon mousse, dry aged salami crisps with parmesan and artichoke tapenade, fresh mango and papaya balls wrapped in capocollo ham, Thai chicken satay, and an up market version of Bajan Fish Cakes started the evening, as guests enjoyed delicious vintage champagne served by Sandalo's butler, Antonio. The buffet, expertly prepared by Chef Rodney, was a smorgasborg of epicurean delight: Grilled lobster tails, seared sea scallops, tempura king prawns, and mint and garlic marinated rack of lamb were complimented by a fresh array of salads and char grilled vegetables. A magnificent display of desserts, including decadent Bailey's and Mount Gay Rum Triple Chocolate Brownies, Tequila Lemon bars, and assorted chocolates and tropical puddings completed the meal.

Sandalo is one of the premier properties on Barbados' west coast, having undergone an extensive remodeling last year. The 5 bedroom villa, located on the exclusive Gibbs Beach, features a gourmet kitchen, wet bar, swimming pool, and is very tastefully decorated and appointed. Staff includes a chef, butler, and housekeeping staff, all of whom are highly professional and skilled, genuinely friendly, and strive to anticipate your every need. BarbadosBarbados.com offers this property with special extras when booked through our web site.

Your first stop is to the Mount Gay Rum Brand Museum where guests are introduced to the history of Mount Gay Rum and Barbados.

As you walk into an authentic replica of a Barbadian rum shop, the lights go out and the story begins. All tours are given by very professional and friendly guides, and you are given the opportunity to touch and smell the essential elements (sugar cane, molasses and distilled un-aged alcohol) used in the rum making process.

Tell Chris that Billy and Carolyn sent you and you'll be served with the delicious but lethal "Painkiller", a knee-weakening cocktail that is sure to please. TAO Restaurant at The Body Holiday Le Sport, St Lucia

Barbados lies approximately 100 miles east of the Windward Island chain that runs from St Martin to Trinidad and Tobago. This close proximity to neighboring islands affords an ideal opportunity to experience a different flavor of paradise in less than a 30 minute plane ride. We recently visited the lush and verdant island of St Lucia, opting for a 'BodyHoliday' at the Le Sport resort located on the island's northern tip of Gros Islet. Le Sport is an all-inclusive property but don't let that all-you-can-eat stereotype give you the wrong impression: it is an experience you'll remember for the world class cuisine, highly trained and efficient staff, and its revitalizing spa, Oasis. There is a choice of three restaurants at Le Sport, all under the watchful eye of the accomplished and highly organized Executive Chef Daniel Echasseriau. There is a beachfront Deli, offering delicious salads, sandwiches, and light fare. The Cariblue is the main dining area of the resort, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Emphasizing the abundance of fresh local fruits, vegetables, and seafood available in St. Lucia, Cariblue's innovative and authentic ethnic fusion in an overwhelming amount of well presented buffet selections is an Epicurean's delight. The efficiency and quick smiles of the highly trained staff is on par with any resort in the Caribbean. But it is Tao, Le Sport's signature restaurant that deserves the highest praise. Recently awarded the AAA Diamond rating, the prestigious distinction awarded to restaurants that meet rigorous quality standards of service, décor, ambiance, and cutting edge cuisine, Tao is truly a world class restaurant. Tao creates a gastronomic feng shui of absolutely delicious food art from fresh local ingredients with a Pacific rim preparation. Trilogy of Scallop, a mouth watering ménage of citrus scallop ceviche, grilled scallop on filo pastry, and scallop skewers spiked with sake Teriyaki sauce was brilliantly crafted. 'The Sultan Fainted' brings a salad of cumin flavored roasted eggplant and tomato with a goat cheese fondant and black olive tapenade. The freshness of the ingredients the subtle layer after layer of flavor will indeed makes one's knees weak. All of the starters are luxurious sculpted presentations fashioned with an obsession for perfection. Entrees take on a whole new dynamic of food nirvana as the meat ying of menu items such as fragrant Tamarind Lamb with Taro dauphinoise, Miso Pork tenderloin, Supreme of Duck with whispers of truffle oil meet the seafood yang of Olive Oil poached Mahi Mahi, Medallion of Yellow fin tuna to the sublime Seafood Tajine. Executive Chef Daniel Echasseriau's European training and traveled palate is the driving force behind the wildly imaginative menu creations. Restaurant Proprietor Jesse Joseph presides over the dining room, gracefully moving from table to table, and leads its outstanding team of first class servers, who are informative and eager to please. Reservations are an absolute must for Tao, which is open to guests of the property as part of its resort fee as well as to the general public.

Our Visit to Bequia in the Grenadines

While celebrities such as Hugh Grant and Jamima Khan, Sydney Poitier, Canadian coffee and donut chain tycoon Ron Joyce, and a who's who of the world's rich and famous were spending tens of thousands of dollars to see the New Year dawn in Barbados, we decided to leave them all behind and head for the tiny island of Bequia in the Grenadines.

Sold in Barbados exclusively by one of the Caribbean's leading jewelry stores, Diamonds International, the new men's cologne BRIDGETOWN has been well received in several United States test markets, and the attractively packaged men's cologne was a huge success at a recent re-opening of the Diamonds International store here in Holetown. Look for an upcoming website www.bridgetowncologne.com.

The Mews is always big news in Barbados

    Winner at Sandy Lane

Michael Winner, the indefatigable and acerbic London restaurant critic and movie maker, is again in Barbados making the rounds of the top restaurants.

Encamped as always at the better than ever Sandy Lane Hotel (this trip with his lovely on-again girlfriend, Geraldine), Winner's presence creates a buzz even in laid back and seen-it-all before Barbados.

Winner may not be the richest celeb on the island (although close!), but when it comes to restaurant reservations, and getting THE table, he is among an elite few who can dine during the Christmas season in Barbdos when and where they choose.

    Christmas in Barbados

The stores are packed with shoppers trying to find last minute gifts; the supermarkets are trying to keep their shelves stocked; the streets are littered with H cars (hired cars); the hotels and villas have welcomed their usual Christmas guests.

The top restaurants are booked solid with long waiting lists. Uninformed visitors are scrambling to book lunch and dinner reservations to no avail.

Three of the world's billionaires, numerous stage and film stars, as well as British royalty are 'on the books' at this stylish West Coast restaurant.

Graham at Little Good Harbour and The Fish Pot says he has a few rooms available through Christmas, but for New Year's onwards they are fully booked. Their Old Year's Night set dinner menu is only US$140 per person. The Cliff Restaurant has their usual Gala Evening at US$425 per person but don't even bother to call ' they're booked until early January.
